New Interview
Last week, I interviewed Jennifer who runs the newsletter Vegan Tech Nomad.
Introduction and Project Overview: Jennifer, also known as Vegan Tech Nomad, runs a productivity newsletter that rapidly grew to 14k subscribers and 49k Instagram followers in two weeks. She hit $5k months through various revenue streams and is now developing new products like playbooks and courses.
Background and Inspiration: Initially intending to post about vegan food and travel, Jennifer accidentally went viral for productivity and tech content. Her experience creating videos for her edtech startup job helped her improve and eventually achieve viral success. She enjoys sharing helpful content and making a positive impact.
Acquiring First Subscribers: Jennifer placed a "coming soon" notice for her newsletter in her Instagram bio, gaining 10k subscribers in about two weeks after going viral. She uses lead magnets and DM automation to grow her subscriber base, detailed in a YouTube video.
Choosing Instagram: Familiarity with Instagram and its daily use made it a natural choice. Although she posts short-form videos across multiple platforms, Instagram has been the most effective for her.
Process for Viral Content: Jennifer experiments with different hooks in her videos to find what performs best. She shared a detailed experiment on her YouTube channel where she tested five variations of a video, revealing that curiosity-driven hooks and visually engaging backgrounds are most effective.
Effective Marketing Channels: Jennifer's content strategy includes posting the same videos across Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and Twitter. Each platform helps reach different audiences, and her tools and processes for this are shared in her videos.
Current Business Status: Jennifer's revenue varies monthly since starting in January 2024. She went viral in December 2023 and began monetizing her content in February 2024. Detailed income reports are shared in her premium newsletter.
Biggest Achievements and Challenges: Going viral multiple times helped Jennifer overcome imposter syndrome and gain confidence. Her main challenges include delaying action due to over-planning, relying too much on others' advice, and not trusting her intuition.
Advice for Entrepreneurs: Jennifer emphasizes taking action immediately and consistently, suggesting that new entrepreneurs start posting content daily and seek accountability from friends.
Recommended Resources: She values soft skills like effective communication, which she honed through experience. Jennifer recommends the resource growth.design and advises focusing on practical experience over specific books or podcasts.
